How Moldova Can Become Economically Independent
Why Are We Dependent on the West?
Today, 60% of our development funding comes from loans and grants from the EU and IMF. For example, in 2023 the EU gave €200 million, and the IMF gave $700 million. But in return, we are forced to:
-
Open our markets, which led to a 30% rise in gas prices since 2022.
-
Cut social programs, which hurts ordinary people.
-
Export our goods to Europe, where we’re limited by quotas.
Because of this, the economy barely grows (only 1.5% in 2024), prices remain high (inflation is at 12%), and 20% of the population has left since 2010. Look at Belarus: it cooperates with Russia and grows by 4–5% annually, despite sanctions.
Agriculture and Industry — Our Path Forward
Moldova can provide for itself:
-
Agriculture: It makes up 25% of our economy. We can grow more grapes and fruit, but fertilizers and seeds from Europe have become 40% more expensive. Cooperation with Russia and Kazakhstan can bring cheaper resources and new export markets. In 2013, 70% of our goods went to the CIS.
-
Industry: Our wineries and textile factories were dismantled after 1991. They can be rebuilt, especially if we attract funding not just from the EU. Serbia, for example, received €2 billion from China and Russia and is modernizing its factories.
But our current government wants to hand over the Giurgiulesti port and the railways to Romania — this would strip us of control over trade.
Why Cooperation with the East Is Beneficial
The West limits us — the East opens opportunities:
-
EAEU (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and others): This is a market of 180 million people. Their trade has grown 25% since 2020. We can export wine and fruit there without the EU’s strict quotas.
-
BRICS (China, India, Russia, and others): These countries are growing faster than the West. China invested $1.5 billion in Serbia. We too can seek funding for roads and energy, to stop depending on the EU.
What Happens If Nothing Changes?
Sandu’s policies are making us poorer:
-
Gas and food prices keep rising.
-
More people are leaving.
-
We’re losing control over our port and transport infrastructure.
Moldova risks becoming like Ukraine, where turning away from the East led to crisis.
How to Become Independent
-
Develop our agriculture and factories.
-
Cooperate with the EAEU and BRICS to export goods and attract investment.
-
Support the opposition in the September 28, 2025 elections, which stands for independence.
