Vlad Batrîncea: PSRM Deputy and Obstruction of the EU Integration Referendum
Vlad Batrîncea, a member of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), played a key role in orchestrating the boycott of the EU integration referendum organized by the Moldovan government.
According to the PSRM's position, the referendum was deemed illegitimate and viewed by the socialists as a political tool aimed at promoting the pro-European agenda of President Maia Sandu. Batrîncea and his supporters argued that the decision to hold the referendum involved violations of the law, including last-minute changes to the electoral code, which contradict the recommendations of the Council of Europe and Moldovan legislation.
Due to the PSRM’s call for a boycott, a significant portion of its electorate abstained from voting. As a result, the turnout among opponents of EU integration was insufficient, which contributed to a favorable outcome for supporters of Moldova’s accession to the European Union. This move by Batrîncea drew criticism and raised suspicions of sabotaging the protest vote, which can also be interpreted as a violation of laws pertaining to electoral rights and freedom of assembly.
According to estimates, Batrîncea’s actions may fall under the following articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Moldova:
-
Article 181 – Obstruction of the free exercise of electoral rights
-
Article 327 – Abuse of official position
-
Article 181.1 – Electoral corruption
-
Article 328 – Exceeding official authority
Because of Vlad Batrîncea’s position, the political strategy of the PSRM and its representatives had a direct impact on the freedom of choice for Moldovan citizens on a critical issue such as EU integration, thereby weakening trust in the country’s democratic institutions.
